Measures Against Theft and Cybercrime

If you reside in countries with high theft rates, understanding the methods employed by thieves can be immensely beneficial. Firstly, let us list the top five European countries with the highest rates of theft: Denmark, Sweden, the United Kingdom, France, and Finland. If you believe that these countries do not even feature in the global top 20, you are mistaken. In fact, on a global scale, these countries still rank within the top 10, with Uruguay, Australia, and Grenada joining the list just after Sweden.

This indicates that, although Western Europe is perceived as safer regarding armed assaults, crimes such as cyber fraud, theft, burglary, and knife attacks are prevalent in the region.

For instance, while someone travelling to Mexico must focus on personal safety, those visiting Western and Northern European countries should be vigilant about protecting their credit cards, phones, and personal identification details. Particularly in the UK, where cybercrime is prevalent, even sharing your name and surname can enable sophisticated fraudsters to access your card details. To raise awareness, the national reporting centre for fraud and cybercrime, Action Fraud, has released a video highlighting these risks. I have included the link to this video below. I strongly recommend watching it to enhance your awareness of cybercrime: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrjT8m0hcKU.

Additionally, ensure you activate two-factor authentication for all your online accounts. While this may take some time, it is certainly worth the effort. This way, if your card is stolen, no one can use it for online transactions without the verification code sent to your phone or email. Furthermore, reducing the contactless payment limit on your card is also advisable. In the UK, this limit can be lowered to as little as £30, or contactless payments can be completely disabled. This measure helps minimise the amount a thief could spend before you can report the theft to your bank.

Regarding physical theft, it is useful to be aware of the most common tactics employed by thieves.

In confined spaces (such as lifts), keep your back and bag pressed against the wall. Thieves often work in groups; one person may bump into you from the front, while another works to steal from your bag from behind. Be prepared for such distraction techniques.

Thieves may also use a piece of paper, a newspaper, or a map to divert your attention and steal your valuables. They might place a paper in front of your phone and attempt to show you something while subtly moving your phone. If you are unfamiliar with this tactic, you might not notice the theft despite your vigilance.

If someone approaches you asking for directions or pretending to be a beggar or mute while holding a piece of paper, keep a close eye on your phone and valuables. Your goodwill might be exploited, risking the loss of thousands of pounds and your cherished photos and videos.

Finally, I would like to emphasise the simplest yet most effective protection measure: avoid wearing valuable watches and jewellery when you go out. Such items can quickly make you a target for thieves.

Moreover, be aware that social media posts can also make you a target. Details about your location, personal information, family, and friends can all serve as potential clues for criminals. Keep your private life as discreet as possible. Sharing online instagram stories while on holiday could alert a thief to target your home.

Despite the challenges presented by the digital world, living with awareness can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to such threats. Whatever you do, always stay prepared; prepare for winter, and if summer comes, consider it a bonus!
